Protrusioon

Protrusioon is a technical term used to describe a material or biological structure that extends outward beyond its surrounding surface. The word derives from the Latin verb protrudere, meaning “to thrust out,” and has been adapted into modern terminology across several scientific disciplines.

In geology, protrusioon refers to the upward or outward displacement of earth’s crust, often associated with tectonic plate boundary interactions. For example, the outward thrusting of continental margins during orogenic events can result in the formation of mountain ranges, a process that geologists may describe as a large-scale protrusioon. The term is also used in volcanology to discuss the dome‑forming activity of erupting magma, where molten rock builds a protrusioon on a volcanic edifice.
