Protonationalist

Protonationalist is a term used to describe an individual or group that holds beliefs and sentiments associated with nationalism but precedes or is in the early stages of developing a more fully formed national identity. It suggests a nascent or foundational form of national consciousness, where the core elements of loyalty to a nation or shared identity are present but may not yet be as complex, articulated, or widespread as in mature nationalism.

The concept implies a potential trajectory towards more developed nationalism. A protonationalist might feel a sense of belonging to a particular group, share common cultural markers, or exhibit a desire for self-determination. However, these feelings may be less organized, less defined by explicit political boundaries, or less deeply ingrained in the collective consciousness compared to established nationalist movements.

It can be applied to historical contexts where a sense of shared identity was emerging among a population that had not yet formed a distinct nation-state. This might involve shared language, religion, or a common experience of oppression or aspiration. In contemporary usage, it could refer to groups in the process of forging a national identity, perhaps in the context of post-colonial societies or newly formed political entities. The term emphasizes the preliminary or formative nature of these nationalistic inclinations.
