Protokolliründed, also known as protocol attacks, are a category of cyberattacks that exploit vulnerabilities within the communication protocols used by networks and software. These attacks target the inherent weaknesses or misconfigurations in how devices and applications exchange data, rather than the underlying operating system or hardware. By understanding and manipulating the established rules of a protocol, attackers can intercept, modify, or disrupt communication, leading to various malicious outcomes.

Common types of protocol attacks include man-in-the-middle attacks, where an attacker secretly relays and possibly alters the communication between two parties who believe they are directly communicating with each other. Another example is session hijacking, where an attacker takes over an established communication session between a user and a server. Denial-of-service (DoS) attacks can also be protocol-based, overwhelming a system with malformed or excessive protocol requests, rendering it unavailable to legitimate users.

Attackers may exploit known weaknesses in protocols like HTTP, TCP/IP, DNS, or SMTP. For instance, an attacker might craft specific packets that exploit a buffer overflow vulnerability in a network service's implementation of a protocol, leading to code execution. Similarly, by sending malformed DNS queries, an attacker could potentially redirect users to malicious websites. The effectiveness of these attacks often depends on the attacker's ability to understand the protocol's specifications and identify deviations or implementation flaws. Defending against protocol attacks involves implementing secure coding practices, robust network security measures, and keeping software and protocols up-to-date to patch known vulnerabilities.
