Protokollets

Protokollets is the definite form of protokoll in several Nordic languages, most commonly Swedish, Norwegian and Danish. The word protokoll can refer to two related concepts: a set of formal rules and procedures (the protocol) and the written record of proceedings from a meeting (the minutes). Protokollets, as the possessive form, can denote either the protocol as a document belonging to someone or, more often in context, the minutes or official record itself.

In everyday and institutional use, protokollet (the protocol) as minutes documents attendance, agenda items, key statements, decisions, and voting results. These records are produced by a secretary or clerk and are kept as part of formal archives. They serve as a legal or administrative record, enable accountability, and may be published or shared with stakeholders depending on rules of access and privacy.

The word also appears in the broader sense of protocol as a set of rules or procedures governing behavior, ceremony, or communication. In diplomacy, diplomacy-related discipline, and organizational governance, protokoll can refer to both the procedural rules (diplomatic protocol) and the formalized documents that arise from meetings or negotiations.

Etymologically, protokoll derives from Latin or French sources meaning a printed record or official entry. Because the same term covers both procedural rules and meeting records, context typically clarifies whether protokollet refers to the rules or to the minutes of a particular gathering.
