Protogrammar

Protogrammar refers to hypothetical early stages of language development in hominins. It is not a single, unified theory but rather a collection of ideas exploring how language might have begun from simpler communication systems. These theories often consider a gradual evolutionary process, moving from gestural or vocal signals with limited meaning to more complex structures.

One perspective suggests that protogrammar involved simple, uninflected word-like units, akin to a "root language."
