The term combines “protagonist” and “led” to signal leadership or steering by the main character. It is a relatively recent, informal label rather than a canonical genre, and it appears in discussions of narrative focus and point of view.

Core features include pronounced protagonist agency, a coherent personal or moral arc, and plot developments contingent on the protagonist’s decisions. Narration may be limited to the protagonist’s perspective or closely aligned with their experiences, though not all examples require first-person narration.

In practice, protagonist-led storytelling is common in single-character novels, biopics focusing on a central figure, and many adventure or coming-of-age stories. In interactive contexts, video games or interactive fiction often use a protagonist-led frame to align player actions with a defined character.

It contrasts with ensemble or chorus-driven structures, where multiple perspectives or supporting characters equally drive the plot. It also relates to character-driven storytelling, though the label emphasizes leadership of the central figure.
