Prostasykliinihoidon, also known as prostaglandin therapy, refers to the administration of prostaglandin analogs. These are synthetic compounds that mimic the effects of naturally occurring prostaglandins in the body. Prostaglandins are lipid compounds with diverse hormone-like effects, influencing various physiological processes.

In a medical context, prostacyclin therapy is primarily used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). PAH is a rare but serious condition characterized by high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs and the right side of the heart. Prostanoids, such as epoprostenol, treprostinil, iloprost, and selexipag, are potent vasodilators, meaning they help to widen blood vessels. By relaxing and widening the pulmonary arteries, prostacyclin therapy reduces the pressure within them, improving blood flow and easing the workload on the right ventricle of the heart.

Administration methods for prostacyclin therapy vary depending on the specific drug and the patient's condition. Some are administered via continuous intravenous infusion, requiring a surgically implanted catheter. Others can be inhaled, taken orally, or injected subcutaneously. The choice of drug and administration route is individualized and depends on factors like disease severity, patient tolerance, and logistical considerations.

While effective in managing PAH symptoms and improving exercise capacity, prostacyclin therapy can have side effects. These may include flushing, headache, nausea, jaw pain, and diarrhea. Close medical supervision is essential to monitor treatment efficacy and manage potential adverse effects. The development and availability of different prostacyclin analogs and administration routes have significantly improved the treatment landscape for patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension.
