Prosessiöljyinä, also known as process oils, are petroleum-derived or synthetic oils used in a wide variety of industrial applications. They are specifically formulated to enhance the performance, processing, or properties of other materials during manufacturing. Unlike lubricating oils, which are primarily used to reduce friction, process oils are often incorporated as essential components in the final product or used as aids in manufacturing processes.

The classification of process oils is broad and depends on their intended use. Common types include paraffinic oils, naphthenic oils, and aromatic oils. Paraffinic oils are known for their low volatility and good thermal stability, making them suitable for applications requiring high temperatures. Naphthenic oils offer better solvency and are often used in rubber and tire manufacturing. Key applications for process oils include their use as extenders and plasticizers in the rubber industry, particularly for tire production, where they improve flexibility and processing ease. They are also utilized in the production of adhesives, sealants, coatings, and inks, contributing to properties like viscosity, tackiness, and color. In the textile industry, they can act as lubricants for fibers and yarns. Furthermore, certain process oils are employed in metalworking fluids and as components in agricultural formulations. The selection of a specific process oil depends on factors such as compatibility with the base material, desired final properties, regulatory requirements, and environmental considerations.
