Industrially, propyleeniglykol is primarily produced through the hydration of propylene oxide. This process yields two isomers, with the 1,2-propanediol being the dominant and commercially significant form. It is recognized for its low toxicity, which makes it a versatile ingredient in many consumer and industrial applications.

In the food industry, it is used as a humectant, solvent, and preservative, often labeled as E1520. It helps maintain moisture in foods and acts as a carrier for flavors and colors. In pharmaceuticals, propyleeniglykol serves as a solvent for oral, injectable, and topical formulations. It is also found in cosmetics and personal care products, such as lotions, shampoos, and deodorants, due to its moisturizing properties.
