Propionsyre

Propionsyre, also known as propanoic acid, is a short-chain fatty acid with the chemical formula CH3CH2COOH. It is a colorless liquid with a pungent odor. Propionic acid occurs naturally in the body as a byproduct of carbohydrate and fat metabolism. It is also produced by certain bacteria.

In industrial applications, propionic acid is primarily used as a preservative. It is effective against mold and bacteria, and is commonly added to baked goods, cheese, and animal feed. Propionic acid is also used in the synthesis of other chemicals, such as propionates, which are used in plastics and pharmaceuticals.

Propionic acid can be produced synthetically through the oxidation of propanal or by the carbonylation of ethanol. It can also be obtained from petroleum. While generally recognized as safe for consumption in food applications, propionic acid can be irritating to the skin and eyes. Exposure to high concentrations can cause respiratory irritation.
