Propertiesstiffness is a term used to describe the stiffness property of a material or structure, indicating how resistant it is to deformation under external forces. It encompasses both material-level factors, such as elastic moduli, and geometry-dependent structural attributes. In linear elastic systems, stiffness relates force to displacement: for a one-dimensional spring, F = kδ; for structural elements, axial stiffness is EA/L and bending stiffness is EI, where E is Young's modulus, A the cross-sectional area, L the length, and I the second moment of area. In numerical models, stiffness is captured by matrices that map displacements to forces, commonly expressed as F = Ku in finite element analysis.

Stiffness can be measured or inferred from tests. Material stiffness is typically characterized by Young's modulus from tensile tests or by shear modulus from torsion tests. For assembled components, static tests measure deflection under known loads to infer overall stiffness, while dynamic methods determine stiffness from resonant frequencies or vibration responses. Local stiffness measurements can be obtained by indentation or nanoindentation techniques using contact mechanics.

Stiffness is influenced by temperature, strain rate, and material anisotropy. It is distinct from strength: a material can be stiff yet brittle, or compliant yet strong. In engineering practice, stiffness informs predictions of deformation, natural frequencies, and controllability in systems such as buildings, vehicles, and machinery. In simulations, accurate stiffness models are essential for stable, realistic results and reliable design decisions.
