A proofreader is a professional who reviews text to identify and correct errors in spelling, punctuation, grammar, typography, formatting, and style before publication. While editors work on content, structure, and clarity, proofreading is typically the final quality check in the production process. In many contexts, fact-checking and source verification occur separately, but proofreaders may confirm that dates, names, and figures appear consistent with the source material.

Tasks include scanning for typographical mistakes, ensuring consistent spelling of names and terms, verifying dates, numbers, and citations, checking headlines and typography for consistency, and confirming alignment with a specified house style or publication guide. Proofreaders mark or implement corrections and may leave notes for authors or editors about unclear passages or potential issues.

Key skills include strong command of the language, meticulous attention to detail, and familiarity with relevant style guides (for example, APA, Chicago, MLA) or organizational house styles. Proficiency with word processors and review tools (track changes, comments) and basic proofreading marks is common. Ability to work with tight deadlines and in various formats (print, digital, HTML) is often required.

Proofreaders work across settings such as book publishing, newspapers, magazines, academic journals, corporate communications, and legal or technical fields. Training ranges from formal coursework and certifications to on-the-job experience; many have degrees in English, journalism, or related fields. Career paths may lead to copy editing, editorial assisting, or senior proofreading roles.
