Proliferatiefase is a term used in biology to describe a phase characterized by active cell proliferation and tissue growth. The specific events and duration depend on the biological context, but the common feature is the expansion of cells and rebuilding of tissue after injury or loss.

In wound healing, the proliferative phase follows the inflammatory response and typically lasts from several days to weeks. Fibroblasts proliferate and synthesize extracellular matrix, particularly collagen. New blood vessels form through angiogenesis, and granulation tissue develops. Epithelial cells migrate and proliferate to re-epithelialize the wound, while wound contraction may occur. The aim is to restore tissue integrity and function.

In gynecology and endocrinology, the proliferative phase refers to the first half of the menstrual cycle, roughly from after menstruation to ovulation. Estrogen produced by maturing follicles stimulates regeneration and thickening of the endometrium. Endometrial glands proliferate and the stromal tissue becomes more vascular, preparing the lining for potential implantation. This phase ends with ovulation when progesterone production rises after corpus luteum formation.

The term is used across disciplines to indicate a period of tissue growth and cell division, often preceding a phase of remodeling or differentiation. Factors such as hormonal status, nutrition, and health conditions can influence the duration and effectiveness of the proliferative phase.
