Prolaktinudskillelsen

Prolaktinudskillelsen refers to the release of prolactin, a hormone primarily produced by the anterior pituitary gland. This hormone plays a crucial role in numerous physiological processes, most notably in stimulating milk production in lactating mothers, a process known as lactation. Beyond its role in reproduction, prolactin also influences metabolism, immune function, and behavior.

The secretion of prolactin is under tight regulation. Dopamine, released by the hypothalamus, acts as a potent inhibitor of prolactin release. Conversely, various stimuli can increase prolactin levels, including breastfeeding, stress, sleep, and certain medications. Hormonal changes during pregnancy also lead to elevated prolactin.

Disruptions in prolactin secretion can have significant health implications. Hyperprolactinemia, characterized by abnormally high prolactin levels, can lead to symptoms such as irregular menstruation, infertility, and galactorrhea (inappropriate milk production) in women, and decreased libido and erectile dysfunction in men. Conversely, hypoprolactinemia, or low prolactin levels, is less common and typically associated with pituitary dysfunction. Various medical conditions, including tumors of the pituitary gland, can affect prolactin secretion. Medical evaluation is often necessary to diagnose and manage conditions related to prolactin imbalances.
