Prognosztikus

Prognosztikus is an adjective used to describe something related to prognosis—the expected course and outcome of a disease or condition. The word derives from prognózis (prognosis) and from the Greek prognostikos, meaning foreseeing.

In medical contexts, prognosztikus tényezők (prognosztikus faktorok) are variables that are associated with future outcomes such as survival, progression, or response to treatment. These factors are identified in clinical studies and used for risk stratification, treatment planning, and patient counseling. They can be clinical (age, performance status), pathological (tumor stage, histological grade), or molecular/biomarker-based (gene mutations, protein levels).

Common areas of application include oncology, cardiology, and neurology. For example, tumor stage and histological grade are prognosztikus in many cancers, while measurements like ejection fraction or certain biomarkers can be prognosztikus in heart disease. Prognosztikus models or scoring systems combine multiple factors to estimate an individual’s risk or likely outcome, such as predicted survival or probability of adverse events. Such models require validation in specific populations and may evolve with new biomarker discoveries.

The term is distinct from diagnosztikus, which pertains to diagnosing a disease. Prognosztikus assessment focuses on future outcomes rather than current disease identification. In research and practice, prognosztikus evaluations support decision-making and communication about prognosis, while acknowledging that prognosis is probabilistic and influenced by treatment, comorbidities, and patient factors. Etymologically, the term emphasizes foreseeing the course of illness rather than recognizing its present state.
