Prognostico

Prognostico is the forecast of the likely course and outcome of a disease, injury, or other condition, as well as of future events. The term is used in medicine to describe expected progression, survival chances, and potential complications, often expressed as probabilities or timeframes. Prognosis depends on prognostic factors—characteristics of the patient or the disease such as age, stage, biomarker status, comorbidities, and functional ability—that help estimate likely outcomes. Clinicians may distinguish short-term and long-term prognoses and may employ prognostic models or staging systems to quantify risk. It is important to note that prognosis is probabilistic and subject to uncertainty.

Prognostication is the process of forming and communicating a prognosis, balancing data from studies with clinical judgment and patient values. Clear communication about the level of uncertainty and the possible range of outcomes is a core aspect of patient care.

Outside medicine, prognostico can refer to forecasts of future states in fields like meteorology, economics, or project planning, where methods range from statistical models to expert assessment.

Limitations include individual variability, evolving diseases, and the effect of treatments. A good prognosis often reflects early detection, effective therapy, and adherence to care plans.
