Progesteronspiegel refers to the level of progesterone, a vital hormone in the female reproductive system. This hormone plays a crucial role in the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and embryogenesis. Progesterone levels fluctuate significantly throughout a woman's life and even within a single menstrual cycle.

During the menstrual cycle, after ovulation, the corpus luteum produces progesterone, which prepares the uterus for a potential pregnancy by thickening the uterine lining (endometrium). If fertilization does not occur, the corpus luteum degenerates, causing progesterone levels to drop, leading to menstruation. If pregnancy occurs, progesterone levels rise and remain high throughout the gestation period, preventing uterine contractions and supporting the development of the fetus.

Progesterone levels can be measured through blood tests. These tests are often used to assess ovulation, monitor early pregnancy, diagnose certain reproductive issues, and evaluate hormone replacement therapy. Elevated progesterone levels can be indicative of pregnancy or conditions like corpus luteum defects. Conversely, low progesterone levels might suggest anovulation, early miscarriage, or other hormonal imbalances.
