Progesteronanstieg refers to the rise in the level of the hormone progesterone in the body. This increase is a normal physiological event, particularly in females. In the context of the menstrual cycle, progesterone levels begin to rise after ovulation. This rise is primarily driven by the corpus luteum, a temporary endocrine structure that forms in the ovary after an egg is released. The elevated progesterone prepares the uterus for a potential pregnancy by thickening the uterine lining (endometrium) and making it more receptive to implantation of a fertilized egg.

If pregnancy occurs, progesterone levels continue to rise throughout the gestation period, produced initially by the corpus luteum and later by the placenta. This sustained high level of progesterone is crucial for maintaining the pregnancy, preventing uterine contractions, and supporting the development of the fetus.

In individuals not pregnant, the corpus luteum degenerates if fertilization does not happen, leading to a sharp decline in progesterone levels. This drop triggers menstruation, marking the beginning of a new cycle. Progesterone levels can also increase during certain stages of the reproductive lifespan, such as during pregnancy and sometimes during the use of hormonal contraceptives. Medical conditions or treatments can also influence progesterone levels, leading to either an increase or decrease from typical ranges. Measuring progesterone levels is a common diagnostic tool in fertility assessments and pregnancy monitoring.
