In-person proctoring involves a proctor overseeing test takers in a controlled environment, handling start and end times, distributing or collecting materials, and addressing any irregularities. Remote proctoring uses digital tools to monitor candidates during an online exam. This can be live proctoring, where a human proctor watches via webcam and microphone, or automated proctoring, which uses algorithms to analyze behavior. Common measures include identity verification, environment checks, webcam and screen recording, browser lockdown, and monitoring of audio activity.

Proctored exams are common in many contexts, especially in higher education for online courses or distance learning, as well as in professional certification and licensure exams, where exam integrity is a priority.

Commentary: Proctoring can help deter cheating and standardize testing conditions, but it raises concerns about privacy, data security, and consent. Some students experience anxiety or discomfort with surveillance, and accessibility concerns may arise for individuals with disabilities, non-native language speakers, or those with limited internet access.
