Privatbilisme

Privatbilisme is a term used in transport policy and urban planning to describe an ideology that prioritizes private car ownership and the expansion of road networks as the primary solution to mobility. Proponents argue that private cars offer freedom, flexibility, and economic efficiency, and that market-based pricing—such as fuel taxes, parking fees, and tolls—best manages demand and funds infrastructure.

In public discourse, privatbilisme is often contrasted with strategies that emphasize public transit, cycling, and pedestrian infrastructure, or with policies aimed at compact, low-car urban development. It tends to favor investment in road capacity, car-oriented zoning, and relatively light regulation of driving, while prioritizing individual vehicle use over alternatives.

Critics of privatbilisme point to its associations with traffic congestion, air and noise pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, urban sprawl, and social inequities—particularly for those without cars or with limited mobility options. They argue that heavy emphasis on private cars can undermine the viability of public transportation and active transport, and that land-use planning should better align with transit and pedestrian networks.

Policy debates around privatbilisme often center on balancing road and transit investments, implementing congestion pricing and parking reforms, and promoting more sustainable mobility patterns.
