Princetown

Princetown is a village located in the Dartmoor National Park in Devon, England. It is situated at the geographic center of Dartmoor, making it a popular starting point for walkers, hikers, and cyclists exploring the moorland. The village is known for its elevated position, standing at approximately 1,450 feet (440 meters) above sea level, which often leads to exposed and sometimes challenging weather conditions.

Historically, Princetown was established in the late 18th century as a center for granite quarrying. The most prominent feature of the village is HM Prison Dartmoor, a category C men's prison, which has been a significant employer and a defining presence in Princetown for over two centuries. The prison was originally built to house French prisoners of war during the Napoleonic Wars.

The village has a small but active community and offers several amenities for visitors, including pubs, shops, and a museum dedicated to the history of Dartmoor and its inhabitants, including the prison. The Princetown Railway, a disused railway line, runs through the village and is now a popular walking and cycling trail.
