Primites

Primites is a genus of extinct primates known from fossil remains dating to the early to middle Eocene. Fossils attributed to Primites have been found in North Africa, the Levant, and nearby regions of western Asia, suggesting a distribution across parts of the ancient northern continents. The genus includes several species, with Primites primus serving as the type species.

In terms of morphology, Primites was small to medium-sized for early primates. Dental and jaw material indicate an omnivorous diet with a generalized dentition suitable for processing fruits, seeds, and insects. Postcranial elements suggest grasping hands and feet, consistent with an arboreal lifestyle adapted to life in forest canopies.

Taxonomy and phylogeny: The precise position of Primites within primate evolution is debated. Some analyses place Primites in basal adapiform lineages, while others assign it to early Haplorhini or to a stem anthropoid grouping. The fossil record remains fragmentary, and species definitions rest largely on dental and jaw features.
