Preterves

Preterves are a fictional lineage described in speculative biology and fantasy literature as subterranean, burrowing animals that inhabit networked tunnel systems. The term is not part of real-world taxonomy and its definition varies by author or setting.

Physical traits commonly attributed to preterves include small to medium size (about 15–40 cm), robust forelimbs with digging claws, and a compact body suited to life underground. They are often depicted with reduced eyesight, highly sensitive whiskers, and dense fur. Coloration ranges from pale to brown, sometimes with mottling for soil camouflage.

Ecology and behavior: Preterves typically excavate and inhabit extensive tunnels. They are omnivorous, feeding on tubers, roots, fungi, and invertebrates. Some species hoard food, and social organization ranges from solitary individuals to small kin groups that communicate through tactile signals, scent marking, and low-frequency sounds.

Reproduction and life cycle: Breeding is described as seasonal, with litters of two to six offspring. Young are altricial and require prolonged parental care; in some accounts, caregiving is shared among relatives.

Taxonomy and evolution: Within fiction, preterves appear in various works and are not a real clade. Origins are tied to imagined subterranean ecosystems or ancient adaptive radiations, with differing hypotheses about their relationships to other cave-dwelling lineages.
