Presenteda

Presenteda is a proposed open standard for synchronized presentation and multimedia delivery across networked devices. It aims to coordinate the real-time rendering of slides, charts, video, and interactive elements on multiple displays and user devices within a shared session. The term is a neologism coined to describe a standardized approach to presenting content in synchronized, cross-device environments.

Presenteda defines a lightweight data model, a Presentation Tree, consisting of frames, slides, and content nodes, each with metadata such as type, timing, and access constraints. Communication relies on a publish-subscribe or peer-to-peer protocol to push state changes, while a global clock or consensus mechanism maintains temporal alignment. The design emphasizes interoperability with web technologies and existing conferencing tools, using URIs for resource references and WebSocket or WebRTC channels for transport.

Key features include deterministic latency goals, offline preparation with incremental synchronization, support for accessibility metadata, and secure session management via token-based authentication and scoped permissions. It supports both centralized and decentralized topologies to accommodate venues with varying network capabilities.

Conceptualized in 2023 by the Open Presentation Alliance, presenteda has seen experimental deployments in academic conferences and maker spaces. While it has attracted interest for multi-device collaboration, uptake remains limited and is challenged by competing proprietary ecosystems and concerns about latency and vendor dependence.
