Prerecording

Prerecording is the practice of recording audio or video content before it is used in a broadcast, performance, or presentation, rather than capturing events as they happen live. It is employed in many media workflows to provide control over content, pacing, and quality, and to allow editing, localization, and repeated use of segments.

In radio and television, prerecording enables news features, interviews, features, commercials, and recurring segments to be produced and edited before they are scheduled for air. This can improve consistency, allow for post-production fixes, and accommodate time-zone or syndication requirements. In music and film production, prerecording includes laying down instrumental tracks, vocals, sound effects, and music beds prior to a live performance or during the post-production process. In film and television, dialogue may be prerecorded or replaced later through ADR (automatic dialogue replacement) or voice-over work to improve intelligibility or mark localization.

Technological advances such as magnetic tape and digital recording have made prerecording flexible and widely accessible, enabling non-linear editing, multi-track recording, and precise splicing. Prerecorded content can be edited, re-ordered, or re-recorded without the pressures of a live broadcast.

Advantages of prerecording include greater control over content, higher audio and visual quality, and the ability to correct errors. Limitations include reduced spontaneity and potential loss of the live connection with audiences, as well as scheduling, licensing, and rights considerations for pre-produced material.
