Designers and printers collaborate closely during this stage to make sure all elements, such as text, images, and graphics, are positioned correctly and appear as intended.

One of the primary functions of prepress is file preparation. This involves converting various file formats into a standard format suitable for printing, often PDF (Portable Document Format). Prepress professionals also perform tasks like trapping, which prevents gaps between adjacent colors due to slight misalignments during printing. Proofing is another vital step, where a physical or digital representation of the final printed piece is generated for client approval. This allows for any last-minute corrections to be made before mass production.

Furthermore, prepress services manage the creation of plates, which are used to transfer ink onto the paper in offset printing. Digital files are translated into these physical plates through a process called computer-to-plate (CTP) or computer-to-film (CTF).
