Preperuskoulu

Preperuskoulu refers to the period of early childhood education in Finland that precedes compulsory schooling. It is designed to support children's development and learning before they enter the formal comprehensive school system, known as peruskoulu. Preperuskoulu is not compulsory, but participation is high, with most children attending for at least one year before starting peruskoulu.

The focus of preperuskoulu is on holistic child development, encompassing cognitive, social, emotional, and physical growth. Activities are play-based and aim to foster curiosity, creativity, and a love for learning. Children engage in a variety of experiences, including art, music, movement, and exploration of the natural world. The curriculum is guided by national core curricula but is implemented flexibly by local municipalities and individual daycare centers.

Preperuskoulu serves as a crucial transition stage, preparing children for the more structured environment of peruskoulu. It helps children develop essential social skills, such as cooperation and communication, and introduces them to early literacy and numeracy concepts in an age-appropriate manner.
