Preparationsanding, often written as preparation sanding, is a preparatory step in surface finishing where a substrate is sanded before applying coatings, adhesives, or sealants. The aim is to remove contaminants, create a uniform surface texture, and promote adhesion and finish quality. The term is used across industries such as woodworking, metalworking, and automotive refinishing, though the exact procedures can vary by material and coating requirements.

The general process begins with assessment and cleaning of the surface to detect cracks, corrosion, or old coatings. Degreasing and drying are commonly required. Abrasive selection follows, with rough grits used to remove material or defects and finer grits used to smooth the surface and feather edges. Sanding can be dry or wet, depending on the material and coating, and may involve hand sanding, sanding blocks, sponges, or mechanical sanders such as orbital or random-orbit machines. A typical progression moves from coarse (for rapid material removal) to medium and then fine grits to achieve a smooth, ready-to-coat surface. For many coatings, a final scuff with a fine grit is performed to improve adhesion without deeply scoring the surface.

Common abrasives include aluminum oxide and silicon carbide papers, available in a range of grits from around 40 to 400. Safety considerations include dust control, eye and respiratory protection, and proper ventilation. Applications span wood furniture and cabinetry, metal restoration, automotive bodywork, and plastic components. Effective preparationsanding minimizes coating failures and improves finish uniformity when followed by the appropriate primer or sealant.
