Prekenen

Prekenen is the act of delivering a sermon or homily to a religious assembly. In many Christian traditions, it is a central form of public teaching and exhortation, in which a speaker interprets sacred texts, applies them to contemporary life, and invites a response from the congregation. The term is the infinitive of the Dutch verb preken.

The term prekenen comes from the Middle Dutch precken, connected to Latin praedicare and the English predic- root. It describes the act of proclaiming religious truths to a community. In practice, prekenen encompasses a range of sermonic activities across denominations and historical periods.

Content and styles vary by tradition. Expository preaching interprets a passage in its historical context; topical preaching treats a theme across several scriptures; in Catholic and Orthodox contexts, a homily during Mass or divine service provides interpretation and guidance rather than doctrine alone. Evangelical and other Protestant traditions may emphasize exhortation, invitation, or call to action, with varying emphasis on persuasion, application, and personal response.

Delivery and setting: Preaching relies on oratory, rhetoric, and illustration; preachers may be clergy (priests, ministers) or laypersons in some denominations. Preparation often involves biblical exegesis, theological reflection, and consideration of the congregation's circumstances. In many churches preaching is scheduled within weekly worship and guided by liturgical or lectionary frameworks.

History and impact: Early Christian homilies developed within the earliest churches, with formalized preaching gaining prominence in the medieval period. The Reformation elevated preaching as a central church authority, shaping doctrine and practice. In the modern era, preaching adapts to media and digital formats while retaining its role as a primary vehicle for scriptural interpretation and moral exhortation.
