Oratory is the art of public speaking, especially formal rhetoric intended to persuade, inform, or inspire an audience. It emphasizes clear structure, stylistic effectiveness, and persuasive delivery.

In antiquity, oratory was central to civic life. Greek sophists taught rhetoric; Aristotle identified ethos, pathos, logos as core means of persuasion. Cicero and Quintilian shaped Latin and later Western rhetorical theory, emphasizing a disciplined, ethical style and the importance of audience adaptation. Through the medieval and early modern periods, oratory remained essential in sermons, legal settings, and parliamentary debates. In many cultures, trained speakers—lawyers, priests, politicians—were considered key public figures.

Effective oratory combines analysis of audience and purpose with an organized structure: introduction, clear argument, evidence, refutation of counterarguments, and a concluding appeal. Rhetorical devices such as repetition, parallelism, metaphor, and antithesis are common. Delivery aspects include voice control, pace, gesture, eye contact, and breathing. Speakers may employ memorization, extemporaneous speaking, or written texts, depending on context.

Education and practice have long supported oratory. Classical education emphasized memorization and declamation; today public speaking and debate clubs, university courses, and organizations like Toastmasters train skills in presentation, persuasion, and ethical communication.

The influence of oratory extends beyond persuasion to shaping law, politics, religion, and public culture. It has also faced critique for manipulation and demagoguery, prompting ongoing discussions about credibility, ethics, and the responsibility of speakers.
