Preuniversity programs are offered by universities, colleges, and private providers and include foundation years, bridging courses, and international foundation programs. They may lead to admission to degree programs or provide a stand-alone credential for further study.

Curricula in preuniversity programs usually combine subject-specific coursework aligned with university degree requirements, academic and research skills, and language support for non-native speakers. Many programs include English for academic purposes, study-skills workshops, and exposure to university-style assessment. Duration is commonly one academic year, though some systems offer longer formats, and programs may be full-time or modular.

Regional use and pathways vary. In the United States, college-preparatory coursework is typically part of high school, and formal preuniversity programs are less common though some institutions offer foundation programs for international students. In the United Kingdom, foundation courses and pre-sessional programs provide routes into undergraduate degrees. In Australia, Canada, and many European and Asian systems, universities and private colleges offer international foundation programs or pre-university diplomas. In India, the pre-university course (PUC) is a state-level two-year program between secondary schooling and a bachelor’s degree.
