Prasuti

Prasuti is a significant figure in Hindu mythology, primarily known as the wife of Daksha Prajapati and the mother of the goddess Sati. Her lineage connects her to the creation narratives of the universe. In many Puranic texts, Prasuti is described as a daughter of Swayambhu Manu, the progenitor of humankind, and Shatarupa, the first woman. This lineage establishes her as a matriarchal figure from the very beginning of creation.

Prasuti's most prominent role is as the mother of Sati, who later reincarnated as Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva. The story of Sati's birth and her subsequent marriage to Shiva is a central theme in many Hindu scriptures. Prasuti, along with her husband Daksha, often plays a part in the events surrounding their daughter's life, including the controversial Daksha Yajna.

Beyond her role as mother to Sati, Prasuti is sometimes mentioned as having a large number of daughters, often associated with various celestial beings or aspects of the divine. These daughters are said to have married gods or sages, further weaving her into the cosmic tapestry of Hindu cosmology. Her name itself, "Prasuti," is derived from the Sanskrit word for "birth" or "offspring," reflecting her prolific role as a progenitor. While not always a central character in every narrative, her presence anchors important family trees and creation stories.
