Praktinales is a proposed order within the kingdom of algae, consisting of several small to medium-sized filamentous freshwater species. It was introduced in a 2012 taxonomic revision as an attempt to reorganize certain morphologically similar lineages under a single clade. The status of Praktinales is contested, and many researchers treat it as a candidate taxon rather than an established lineage.

The name combines elements intended to reflect the group’s perceived ecological practicality with the standard -ales suffix used for plant orders. This etymology reflects the organizers’ aim to emphasize functional traits alongside traditional taxonomy, though the exact linguistic origins are not universally agreed upon.

Phylogenetic analyses have yielded mixed results: some datasets suggest monophyly within the group, while others place members in unrelated green-algae lineages. Consequently, the rank and membership of Praktinales remain unsettled, with molecular data and morphology discussed in ongoing debate.

Morphology and reproduction: Members are typically colonial or filamentous, with cells surrounded by cellulose-based walls and plastids containing chlorophylls a and b. Most species store starch and reproduce asexually by fragmentation; sexual reproduction is variable, ranging from oogamous to isogamous at different life stages.

Ecology and distribution: Reported from temperate freshwater habitats, including lakes, ponds, and slow streams; some species tolerate brackish conditions. Praktinales are primary producers and can form biofilms on submerged substrates, contributing to nutrient cycling in oligotrophic to mesotrophic systems.

Current status: As of the latest syntheses, Praktinales is not widely accepted in major taxonomic databases. The concept serves as a case study in taxonomic theory and the challenges of classifying microbial eukaryotes based on limited data.
