The term is not widely standardized and appears primarily in critical essays and catalog notes as a way to discuss works that defy conventional boundaries between art, design, and social practice.

In practice, pragmaattisti emphasize process, material honesty, and social relevance. Works associated with this approach often prioritize accessibility, sustainability, and collaborative or participatory modes. They may employ modular systems, reproducible components, or interventions in public space, aiming to produce effects that are usable or legible outside the gallery context. The emphasis is frequently on how a work functions within real-world environments rather than on prestige or novelty alone.

The reception of the term is mixed. Supporters argue that it helps articulate a growing tendency to fuse artistic inquiry with everyday utility, urbanism, and community engagement.
