Präsensgebrauch refers to the various ways the present tense is used in German grammar. While it primarily denotes actions happening in the present moment, its function extends beyond this immediate temporal context. One common use is for habitual actions or states that are ongoing, such as "Ich trinke jeden Morgen Kaffee" (I drink coffee every morning). It also serves to describe general truths or facts, like "Die Sonne geht im Osten auf" (The sun rises in the east).

Furthermore, the German present tense can be used to express future events, especially when the context clearly indicates a future timeframe, often with an adverb of time. An example is "Wir fahren morgen nach Berlin" (We are going to Berlin tomorrow). This future-oriented use is common and idiomatic. Additionally, the present tense can be employed in historical narratives, known as the "historisches Präsens" or historical present, to make past events seem more vivid and immediate. For instance, "Cäsar kommt nach Gallien und besiegt seine Feinde" (Caesar comes to Gaul and defeats his enemies).
