Povsti

Povsti is the Ukrainian term for felt, a non-woven fabric made by matting, condensing, and pressing natural fibers, typically wool. In Ukrainian usage, povsti refers to felt in general, whereas in Russian the standard term for felt is фетр (fetr), with повсть being a related but less common variant in some contexts. The material can be produced by traditional wet felting or by dry/needle felting methods, which build up a dense, cohesive fabric from loose fibers.

Povsti fabrics are characterized by their dense, springy structure, good warmth, and varying degrees of stiffness depending on thickness and finishing. They can be produced in a wide range of thicknesses, textures, and colors, and they accept dyes well. Finishing processes may include sculpting, stiffening for hats, or softening for garments and padding.

Common uses include headwear such as felt hats, protective or insulating layers in footwear, bags and craft projects, bookbinding, and various utilitarian or decorative items. Povsti is valued for its insulation, light weight, durability, and the ability to hold shapes, which makes it suitable for both practical goods and artisanal crafts.

Historically, felt-making is one of the oldest textile techniques and has been practiced across Eurasia for centuries, supporting clothing and gear in nomadic and settled communities alike. In modern contexts, povsti remains a staple in traditional crafts and in markets that emphasize natural fiber materials. Care instructions vary by finish and fiber content but generally favor gentle handling and avoidance of high heat to prevent distortion.
