Poultney
Poultney is a town located in Rutland County, Vermont. Situated in the southwestern part of the state, it lies near the border with New York. The town is bisected by the Poultney River, which lends its name to the community. Poultney was chartered by Governor Benning Wentworth of New Hampshire on August 21, 1761. Like many towns in the region, its early economy was largely agricultural.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Poultney became a significant center for slate quarrying. The
Green Mountain College, a private liberal arts college, was historically located in Poultney, contributing to the
