Poultney

Poultney is a town located in Rutland County, Vermont. Situated in the southwestern part of the state, it lies near the border with New York. The town is bisected by the Poultney River, which lends its name to the community. Poultney was chartered by Governor Benning Wentworth of New Hampshire on August 21, 1761. Like many towns in the region, its early economy was largely agricultural.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Poultney became a significant center for slate quarrying. The rich slate deposits in the surrounding hills led to the establishment of numerous quarries, and Poultney slate was renowned for its quality and durability, used in buildings and roofing across the country. This industry heavily influenced the town's development and population growth during that period.

Green Mountain College, a private liberal arts college, was historically located in Poultney, contributing to the town's cultural and educational landscape for many years before its closure.
