Hampshire is a ceremonial and historic county in South East England, United Kingdom. It lies on the southern coast and is bordered by Dorset and Wiltshire to the west, by Berkshire and Surrey to the north, and by the English Channel to the south and southeast. The Solent strait separates the mainland from the Isle of Wight. The county contains major urban centers such as Portsmouth and Southampton, alongside rural areas including the New Forest and portions of the South Downs. The county town has long been Winchester, a historic city with a prominent cathedral.

Name and history: The name Hampshire derives from the Old English Hamtunscir, a reference to Hamtun (the old name for Southampton) and scir, meaning shire. Winchester has been a political and religious center for centuries, and the area has a long history dating back to pre-Roman times.

Governance: Hampshire is a two-tier non-metropolitan county. Portsmouth and Southampton are unitary authorities, while the remainder of the area is administered by Hampshire County Council in combination with district councils.
