Postiluukku

Postiluukku, or mail slot, is an opening in a building through which mail delivered by a postal service is dropped from the outside into the interior or an entry area. Unlike a traditional external mailbox, a postiluukku is typically built into a door or outer wall and includes a flap on the exterior and a chute or container inside.

In Finland and other Nordic countries, postiluukku is a common feature in many homes and apartment buildings. It allows postal carriers to deliver letters without entering the home or using a separate street-side mailbox. Some designs discharge into a vestibule or hallway, while others drop mail into an interior mail compartment or drop box.

Design and materials vary. Many postiluukku have metal or durable plastic flaps with weatherproof seals, and the interior chute is often lined to guide mail into a collection area. Openings are sized to accept standard letters and small documents, with configurations ranging from door-mounted slots to wall-installed versions.

Security and weather considerations are important. A well-designed postiluukku should minimize drafts, rain ingress, and potential mail theft. Poor installation or flimsy designs can lead to water damage, cold drafts, or unauthorized access to mail.

Installation and maintenance considerations. Postiluukku can be part of new construction or retrofitted into existing doors or walls, sometimes requiring reinforcement and proper sealing. Regular maintenance includes ensuring the flap operates smoothly, cleaning the chute, and checking seals to prevent leaks and drafts.
