Postembryonale

Postembryonale is a term used in developmental biology to describe processes and stages that occur after embryogenesis. In English, the corresponding adjective is postembryonic, while postembryonale is the form used in some European languages. The postembryonal period can include fetal development in mammals, larval or juvenile stages in many organisms, and metamorphic transitions in certain groups. The boundary between embryonic and postembryonic development varies across taxa; for humans the embryonic period ends around the ninth week of gestation, and the remaining pregnancy is part of the fetal or postembryonic period during which organ systems mature.

Postembryonic development is governed by a combination of genetic programs and hormonal signals that drive growth, differentiation, and sometimes substantial morphological change. In insects, metamorphosis is regulated by hormones such as ecdysone and juvenile hormone, producing holometabolous (complete) or hemimetabolous (incomplete) life cycles. In amphibians, thyroid hormone triggers metamorphosis from larval to terrestrial forms. In many vertebrates, postembryonic growth continues after birth or hatching, guided by growth factors and endocrine signals, while prenatal growth in birds and mammals is followed by postnatal development.
