Porträtierung is the process of depicting a person in visual media, with the aim of conveying identity, appearance, and aspects of character. In art, it covers portraits in painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, film, and digital media, as well as staged or documentary representations in other formats. The term derives from the noun Porträt (portrait) with the suffix -ierung to indicate the act or result of making a portrait.

Throughout history, portraiture has served as a record of individuals and as a vehicle for social meaning. Ancient and classical portraits emphasized status and idealization; medieval work often carried devotional or symbolic intent. The Renaissance shifted focus to individual likeness and psychological presence, while Baroque and Rococo portraits underscored power, taste, and narrative. In the 19th century, photography began to democratize portraiture, followed by modern and contemporary shifts toward experimentation with form, identity, and representation. Today, digital tools and AI extend the reach and variety of Porträtierung.

Techniques and conventions vary by medium. Portraits often consider pose, gaze, lighting, and setting to reveal or imply character.
