Portaikkoreiillä

Portaikkoreiillä, scientifically known as Chiloscyllium plagiosum, is a species of carpet shark belonging to the family Hemiscylliidae. It is commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region, inhabiting coral reefs, sandy bottoms, and seagrass beds. These sharks are typically small, reaching a maximum length of about 75 centimeters. They are characterized by their elongated, cylindrical bodies, distinctive spotted patterns, and barbels around their mouths.

Portaikkoreiillä are nocturnal and spend their days resting in crevices or under ledges. At night, they actively forage for small invertebrates, crustaceans, and fish. They are known for their ability to "walk" along the seabed using their pectoral and pelvic fins, a behavior that aids them in navigating their habitat and searching for prey. Their coloration provides excellent camouflage against the reef environment.

Reproduction in Portaikkoreiillä is oviparous, with females laying egg cases that are typically secured to the substrate. The incubation period varies depending on water temperature. Despite their relatively small size and generally docile nature, they are sometimes caught as bycatch in local fisheries. Conservation efforts are important to ensure the health of their reef ecosystems, as they play a role in the marine food web. Their distinctive appearance and unique locomotion make them a subject of interest for marine biologists and divers.
