The archipelago comprises about a dozen islands, with Poran the largest and central hub.

The name Poranteri derives from imagined verb-noun roots in several local languages, typically interpreted as “sea-light” or “shore-bright,” and is used for both the land and its people, the Poranters.

The islands vary from volcanic highlands to low-lying mangrove flats. The central island hosts a mountainous interior protected by ridges, while outer islands feature reef-fringed coasts. The archipelago is ringed by shoals and coral communities.
