The term is applied across disciplines to denote approaches that model population size, structure, and dynamics, as well as genetic composition, disease spread, or social characteristics at the population level.

Scope and concepts: In demography and ecology, populationtheory examines size, growth, age structure, density, fertility, mortality, and migration. In population genetics, it concerns allele frequencies, evolutionary forces, and genetic diversity. In epidemiology, it addresses transmission dynamics, incidence, prevalence, and herd immunity. Across fields, the emphasis is on emergent properties that arise from interactions within populations rather than from single agents.

Methods: Populationtheoretic work employs deterministic models like exponential and logistic growth, and matrix models such as the Leslie or Lefkovitz matrices, as well as stochastic processes, birth-death processes, and coalescent models.
