Populationsstabilität refers to the tendency of a population to remain relatively constant in size over time. This does not imply that the population size is perfectly static, but rather that fluctuations are generally small and temporary, with the population tending to return to a stable equilibrium.

Several factors contribute to population stability. The carrying capacity of the environment, which is the maximum population size that can be sustained by available resources such as food, water, and shelter, plays a crucial role. When a population approaches its carrying capacity, resource scarcity can lead to increased mortality rates or decreased reproductive rates, slowing or halting population growth.

Another key element is the presence of limiting factors, which are environmental conditions that restrict population growth. These can include predation, disease, competition for resources, and adverse weather conditions. Such factors act as natural checks and balances, preventing populations from growing exponentially and contributing to their long-term stability.

Furthermore, density-dependent factors, whose effects on the population vary with population density, are vital. As population density increases, these factors exert stronger pressure, leading to increased mortality or decreased reproduction. Conversely, density-independent factors, such as natural disasters, affect populations regardless of their density. A balance between these various biotic and abiotic factors generally leads to a stable population size.
