Populatiescreening is a method used in public health to identify individuals within a larger population who may have a specific disease or condition before they develop symptoms. The goal is to detect the condition early when it is more treatable or manageable. This process typically involves administering a test to a seemingly healthy group of people, even if they have no known risk factors.

The effectiveness of a screening program depends on several factors. The condition being screened for should be a significant health problem, and there should be an effective treatment or intervention available for those who are found to have the condition. The screening test itself must be accurate, meaning it can correctly identify individuals who have the disease (sensitivity) and those who do not (specificity). False positives can lead to unnecessary anxiety and further testing, while false negatives can delay diagnosis and treatment.

Populatiescreening programs are often implemented for conditions such as certain cancers (e.g., mammography for breast cancer, cervical screening for cervical cancer), infectious diseases (e.g., HIV screening), and developmental disorders in children (e.g., newborn screening for metabolic disorders).
