Popularisér

Popularisér is a verb used to describe the act of making something popular or widely accepted, or of promoting it to a broad audience. In practice, to popularisere something means to simplify, frame, or present it in a way that increases visibility, understanding, or appeal, with the goal of broad adoption or support. The term is common in discussions of media, science communication, marketing, politics, and culture.

The form is derived from the Latin root popular- meaning “of the people” through the Scandinavian verb formation typical for -isere (to make into a certain state). In Danish, the standard spelling is popularisere; the accent form popularisér is unusual and may appear as a typographical variant or in languages that spell the word with an acute accent.

Usage can range from neutral description to promotional rhetoric, and it often involves balancing accessibility with accuracy. Critics argue that over-simplification, sensationalism, or selective framing can distort understanding or mislead audiences, while proponents contend that broader engagement is essential for informed civic participation.

The concept is distinct from political populism. Popularisation aims to raise general awareness or adoption of ideas, whereas populism refers to rhetoric that appeals to the interests or emotions of ordinary people, sometimes against elites.
