Polüoksümetüleen

Polüoksümetüleen, also known as polyoxymethylene (POM), is a high-performance engineering thermoplastic. It is a type of polyacetal, characterized by its linear structure with repeating oxymethylene (-CH2-O-) units. POM is renowned for its excellent mechanical properties, including high stiffness, strength, and hardness, even at low temperatures. It also exhibits good dimensional stability, low friction, and high wear resistance.

The production of POM typically involves the polymerization of formaldehyde or trioxane. There are two main types of POM: homopolymers and copolymers. Homopolymers, derived solely from trioxane, generally offer higher stiffness and tensile strength, while copolymers, produced from trioxane and a small amount of a comonomer like ethylene oxide, provide better thermal and chemical resistance, as well as improved impact strength.

POM's properties make it suitable for a wide range of applications. It is commonly used in precision mechanical parts, gears, bearings, automotive components (such as fuel system parts and seatbelt mechanisms), electrical insulators, and consumer goods (like zippers and appliance parts). Its low moisture absorption and good electrical insulating properties further contribute to its versatility. POM is processed using standard thermoplastic methods, including injection molding, extrusion, and blow molding. It is important to note that POM can be susceptible to degradation from strong acids and bases.
