Polümeermaterjalist

Polümeermaterjalist, commonly referred to as polymer, is a large molecule composed of repeating structural units. These units, called monomers, are linked together by covalent chemical bonds. Polymers can be naturally occurring, such as cellulose and proteins, or synthetically produced, like polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride. The properties of a polymer are highly dependent on the type of monomer, the length of the polymer chain, and how these chains are arranged and interact with each other.

Polymers are broadly classified into two main categories: thermoplastics and thermosets. Thermoplastics can be repeatedly softened by heating and solidified by cooling, allowing them to be molded into various shapes. Examples include polyethylene (used in plastic bags and bottles) and polystyrene (used in disposable cutlery and packaging). Thermosets, on the other hand, undergo an irreversible chemical change when heated, forming a rigid, infusible network structure. Once set, they cannot be reshaped by heating, making them suitable for applications requiring high strength and heat resistance, such as in electrical insulation and durable coatings.

The versatility of polymers has led to their widespread use in countless applications across various industries. They are found in textiles, packaging, construction materials, automotive parts, medical devices, and electronics, among many others. Their relatively low cost, lightweight nature, and tunable properties make them an attractive alternative to traditional materials like metals and ceramics. Research continues to focus on developing new polymers with enhanced properties, improved sustainability, and novel functionalities.
