Polyvinylene

Polyvinylene refers to a class of organic polymers characterized by repeating vinylene (-CH=CH-) units in their backbone. These polymers are often conjugated, meaning they have alternating single and double bonds, which leads to unique electronic and optical properties. The simplest polyvinylene is polyacetylene, which can exist in various isomeric forms, including cis and trans configurations, depending on the arrangement of hydrogen atoms around the double bonds.

The synthesis of polyvinylene can be achieved through various polymerization methods, often involving catalysts. For instance, Ziegler-Natta catalysts are commonly employed in the polymerization of acetylene to form polyacetylene. The properties of polyvinylene, such as conductivity and light absorption, are highly dependent on the degree of conjugation, chain length, and the presence of dopants. Unsubstituted polyacetylene is a semiconductor, but upon doping with oxidizing or reducing agents, it can become electrically conductive, exhibiting metallic properties.

Polyvinylene and its derivatives have garnered interest for their potential applications in fields such as organic electronics, including organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), organic photovoltaics (OPVs), and sensors. The ability to tune their electronic band gap and processability makes them attractive alternatives to traditional inorganic semiconductors.
